History
Mango Limited started production in Nairobi in August 1988 with a single employee. We have expanded over the years and now employ 85 workers. The factory is located on Factory Street in the Industrial Area.
Mango is a Kenyan, private Limited Company, owned jointly by Mr. Bryan Scriven, a UK citizen, and Mr. Misheck Riungu, who is Kenyan.
Mr. Scriven is the managing director. He has over 30 years of experience in the furniture industry as designer, consultant and manufacturer. |
The Factory
The factory is divided into three sections:
- Woodwork
- Metalwork
- Upholstery
It is a mechanized factory with some 30 machine tools of all sorts. It has a 180 Kva generator that can operate all 30 machines in the case of a power outage. Consequently, it can deal with large orders quickly and efficiently. |
What We Make
We are furniture manufacturers, we do not sell other manufacturers' furniture, or any imported furniture. We make a complete range of furniture, wood furniture, metal furniture and upholstered items, as below:
- Dining room furniture
- Kitchen furniture
- Living room furniture
- Wall units
- Sofa sets
- Garden furniture
- Camping furniture
- Office furniture
- Shelving
- School and university furniture
- Hotel and Restaurant furniture.
- Interior accessories
- Sun umbrellas
- We have a complete range of standard models, which are either available in stock or can be produced in a few days.
- We also make custom-made furniture for hotels and other specialised users. The procedure for making custom-made furniture is as follows:
We take your requirements, which are then written and agreed.
We cost the item, we employ two quantity surveyors. We may also make a preliminary sketch
After the cost is agreed, you pay us a deposit of 40 percent of the total value, including VAT. We then produce a shop drawing. After the shop drawing is agreed, we go ahead and produce the item; payment of the balance follows on delivery.
The procedure is laborious, but it insures that the customer gets exactly what he/she wants.
It is difficult to obtain statistics on the furniture industry in Kenya, but Mango Limited is probably about number four, in terms of market share. |

Prices
The prices of our standard items are uniform at all our outlets. Prices are net without discount. For sales, larger than 12 items, quantity discounts can be arranged. Prices for custom-made articles are by negotiation. |
Materials
The wood used is either from Kenya or the DRC; it is dried to 10 percent moisture content before it is made into furniture. The factory possesses a 67 cubic meter timber drying kiln. The hardware (hinges, locks, drawer runners, etc.) is imported from Hafele, Nargold, Germany.
Warranty
Our warranty is unique, as follows:
"THERE IS NO FIXED WARRANTY PERIOD. WE GUARANTEE THE FURNITURE FREE FROM DEFECTS OF WORKMANSHIP OR MATERIALS WITHOUT TIME LIMIT, BUT THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR NOR FAILURE DUE TO IMPROPER USE"
We are able to give such a guarantee because we are sure of the quality of our products. |
Management and Organizational Capability
Because we aim at international standards, the methods of management and production are different from other companies. Production relies on machines and is more rationalized. Workers have been trained to use these methods. All new designs are initiated with drawings; all key workers have been trained to understand and work from drawings.
